Inoculation
Inoculation is the process of introducing mushroom spores or mycelium to a substrate (such as straw, sawdust, or grain) that provides nutrients for growth. This is often done in a sterile environment to prevent contamination by other fungi or bacteria.
Colonization
During colonization, the mycelium grows and spreads throughout the substrate. This phase typically takes a few weeks, and the substrate should be kept in a dark, warm place to encourage growth. The mycelium will start to appear as a white, fuzzy growth.
Fruiting
Fruiting is the stage where environmental conditions are altered (such as light, humidity, and temperature) to stimulate the mycelium to produce mushrooms. This phase can lead to the formation of primordia (baby mushrooms) that develop into mature fruiting bodies.
Harvesting
Harvesting occurs when the mushrooms are fully mature and ready to be picked. Timing is crucial as mushrooms can quickly over-mature and release spores. They should be harvested carefully to avoid damaging the surrounding mycelium.
